A LESSON PLAN FOR CHELSEA

Even when two look alike- they are different.

Meet my dog Chubby.

Chubby is a teenager chock full of learning differences.
Potty training? Who needs it?
Refrain from biting the fingers of small children? Why?
Stop trying to bring down a Southwest Airlines jet invading the airspace over his backyard on approach to Hobby by chasing it? And give up?
Stop slipping out when nobody is looking and go exploring in the neighborhood? What, no more dog paddling in backyard pools?

In fact, it's likely he views these pieces of himself as his rightful gifts. What those of us in his family consider flaws, I'm certain he views as his strengths.

And in recent months as age-related challenges like blindness, arthritis, auditory decline, and difficulty biting due to sensitive teeth set in- his motto seems to be march on.
hmmmm……….

Now, back to the subject at hand. The following is a lesson plan I have created for a 9 yr old student.

The three slides above introduce Chelsea, describe her learning needs and offer web 2.0 tools to meet those needs. The lesson plan  is from Seussville, the official website of the Dr. Seuss children's stories. The web 2.0 tools suggested for teaching the learning objectives to Chelsea are discussed.

Challenges that this student may experience as she engages with the technologies advocated for her are:

1. It is common for students with LD to struggle with how to begin assignments. In Learning Objective 1, Chelsea may benefit from guidance in making predictions and in brainstorming terms associated with them.

2. Skills for narrowing internet searches are vital, particularly for those with LD. For Learning Objective 2, Chelsea will likely need help customizing internet searches. Google provides great information about creating search strings and fine tuning search engine results.

3. Fortunately, taking photos and video using cell phones is something many children are familiar with or pick up easily. However, for Learning Objective 3, Chelsea would probably like help with posting various media to a webpage template. Though not a difficult skill to learn, she may not have been exposed to this yet.
